At the end of March 2024, a competition was held to fund educational and  cultural-historical tracks of the "RAFU Summer Multidisciplinary University" (RAFU SMU), which has been traditionally organised by RAFU member universities since 2022 with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

The initial goal of the RAFU SMU was to support foreign graduates of Russian universities who are already working in African countries, which would contribute to strengthening co-operation between Russia and the continent's countries in the fields of education, science and economic development.

In 2022, more than 100 people underwent advanced training at 15 educational programmes at 10 Russian RAFU universities as part of the SMU.

In 2023, 12 educational and cultural-historical tracks were implemented in 10 RAFU universities, where 150 people from 25 African countries studied.

This year, 19 Russian universities will offer African students 19 educational programmes in various areas: geology and meteorology, ecology and sustainable development, computer science and artificial intelligence, medical and biotechnology, agriculture and water management, and, of course, Russian language, culture and traditions. Most of the professional development programmes will take place at RAFU universities from July to September 2024. It is planned to train about 270 African citizens in 19 programmes.

From 2024, SMU educational programmes are targeted educational programmes aimed at improving the qualifications of African citizens for further implementation of joint Russian-African educational and scientific projects.
